ATTRACTIONS

BARBOUR'S GENERAL STORE is an authentic country store. It is named for the donor, G.E. Barbour Inc. spice merchants in the area since 1867. The store is filled with merchandise from the Victorian era and houses a combination barbershop/dental office.

BRUNSWICK SQUARE SHOPPING CENTRE with over 70 shops and services, is "the place to shop in Uptown Saint John"! Anchoring Atlantic Canada's longest indoor, climate-controlled pedway system, it is your Inside Connection to shopping, dining and entertainment.

CANADA GAMES AQUATIC CENTRE offers visitors an opportunity for fitness and fun at an award winning aquatic facility. Facilities include two pools with large waterslides, hot tubs, sauna and steamrooms on deck level and fitness centre.

CITY MARKET, located in the heart of uptown was built in 1876. It is the only commercial building still in use in the uptown area which survived the Great Fire of 1877. The market stalls sell hand-crafted items, local produce, and special delicacies in season: lobster, fiddleheads, salmon and dulse.

EAST POINT SHOPPING, located on Fashion Drive in East Saint John on the corner of Retail Drive and Westmorland Road. This centre offers shoppers a variety of merchandise in a fashionable attractive setting. For information call 634-5711 www.eastpointshopping.ca

HARBOUR PASSAGE follow the cranberry walk way which begins at Market Square, wends around Saint John Harbour, pass the site of Fort LaTour, under the Harbour Bridge and continues on to Reversing Falls - a magical link with today and the past of Saint John.

HARBOUR STATION opened in 1993 as a multi-purpose entertainment centre. It is the home of the Sea Dogs Hockey Team from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

IRVING NATURE PARK, a 600-acre (243 hectare) coastal delight, was created by J.D. Irving, Limited. Minutes from the city centre, the public can enjoy a variety of ecosystems along the Bay of Fundy. A road and eight hiking trails circle the park. www.ifdn.com.

KING'S SQUARE is one of four 'royal' squares included in the original town plan of 1783. The pathways were laid out in a Union Jack pattern. King's Square is the site of many monuments commemorating Saint John heroes.

MARKET SQUARE, Saint John's "Festival Place" incorporates 100 year old warehouses and modern architecture. It houses the Hilton Hotel, Trade and Convention Centre, Regional Library, New Brunswick Museum, shops, restaurants and outdoor cafes.

NEW BRUNSWICK MUSEUM ARCHIVES & RESEARCH LIBRARY. This facility located in the original museum building at 277 Douglas Avenue is extensively used by historical researchers and genealogists because of the scope of their unique and in-depth published and unpublished collections. (506) 643-2322.

OLD BURIAL GROUNDS were set aside as a burial place in the original town plan. The oldest stone dates to 1784. In April 1848, the Burial Grounds were closed to further burials. In 1997, the Irving Family restored this historic site.

OLD COUNTY COURTHOUSE was built in 1829 and is still in use as a courthouse. A notable architectural feature is the free-standing spiral stone staircase leading from the ground floor to the upper floors.

QUEEN SQUARE situated four blocks south of King's Square is another of the 'royal' squares designed by Paul Bedell in 1783. Most of the trees in this square were planted in 1883 by descendants of the original Loyalist settlers.

REVERSING FALLS is a natural phenomenon which occurs when the highest tides in the world flowing in and out of the Bay of Fundy through a narrow rocky gorge force the St. John River to reverse its flow. Twice a day the Bay wins, forcing the River to churn, tumble and flow upstream. For tide information visit tourismsaintjohn.com

ROCKWOOD PARK is a 2,200-acre parkland, the largest municipal park in Canada. Fun and outdoor adventures are never out of season in this park. The Cherry Brook Zoo,with over 35 species of exotic and endangered animals, is also located at Rockwood Park.

SAINT JOHN FREE PUBLIC LIBRARY, founded in 1883, is one of the oldest public libraries in Canada. An extensive collection of early local newspapers is available to researchers on microfilm.

TRINITY ROYAL PRESERVATION AREA is a 20-block area in uptown Saint John, designated as a Heritage Preservation Area in 1982. The City of Saint John has created a written guide outlining walking tours for visitors which also give the architectural and historical backgrounds of these Victorian buildings.

MUSEUMS & GALLERIES

CARLETON MARTELLO TOWER, located on the western side of the harbour, this circular stone fortification is a national historic site with ties to both the War of 1812 and World War II.

GANONG CHOCOLATE MUSEUM, The Chocolate Museum is a "sweet" inviting, local museum that tells the story of candymaking in St. Stephen since 1873. (506) 466-7848 www.chocolatemuseum.ca

HAYWARD FINE CHINA MUSEUM, 85 Princess Street, is the first China Museum in Canada. Hayward and Warwick, retailers of china and earthenware since 1855, operate the Museum.

KEIRSTEAD'S FLOWER MUSEUM is located at the corner of Charlotte and Princess Streets. It has a seven-room gift shop spread out over two floors providing gifts galore. A public washroom is also available.

LOYALIST HOUSE was built by David Daniel Merritt in the early 1800’s. It survived the Great Fire of 1877 and is the city centre’s oldest standing wooden structure. It has been restored as a museum with period furnishings. During the off season by appointment only: Call (506) 652-3590.

NEW BRUNSWICK MUSEUM, at 1 Market Square, provides a remarkable opportunity to discover our history, natural sciences, fine and decorative arts, to see whales, explore New Brunswick’s shipbuilding heritage, learn about the Bay of Fundy high tides or see evidence of a unique geological history.

SAINT JOHN ARTS CENTRE promotes the art and artists of the area in many disciplines through exhibits, lectures, workshops and their gift shop. There are five galleries located in this beautiful Carnegie heritage building.

SAINT JOHN ART CLUB GALLERY is maintained by members of the Saint John Art Club which was organized in 1908. It features the work of local artists and is located on the 3rd floor of Brunswick Square.

SAINT JOHN FIREFIGHTERS MUSEUM is housed in Engine House #2, located next to the County Courthouse on Sydney Street. The displays include an early fire engine, fire equipment from through the years and pictures depicting the Great Fire of Saint John. In the off-season, please contact us for an appointment. SAINT JOHN JEWISH HISTORICAL MUSEUM is housed in a former YWCA building at 29 Wellington Row, exhibits and chronicles Jewish life in Saint John since the first immigrants arrived in 1858. During the off season tours can be arranged by appointment. (506) 633-1833

TRINITY GALLERIES located on Germain Street in a restored 1878 heritage property, showcases established Maritime artists.
